As you may have heard, USA Gymnastics (both the Junior Olympic Program and the NCAA) has switched to the open-ended scoring system. However, the men's rules are very similar to last year. Here is a summary for your club's convenience:
We will be using the Level 9 Junior Olympic Program Rules. The score is composed of difficulty, required element groups, presentation, and bonus.
Difficulty: 8 highest value skills are counted, one of which must be the dismount There is no required number of A's, B's, etc. However, because it's open-ended, those with more higher-value skills will receive a higher "difficulty" score. Each A = 0.1 Each B = 0.2 Each C = 0.3 Each D = 0.4 Each E = 0.5 Each F = 0.6 For example, a routine with one D, two Cs, two Bs, and three As will receive a difficulty score of 1.7. A routine with four Cs, three Bs, and four As will receive a difficulty score of 1.9 (count only top 8). Note: A routine with less than six skills will receive -0.5 per skill less than six.
Element Groups: Four FIG Element Groups are required (one of which must be the dismount). 0.5 per element group requirement met. A skill of any value may be used (except for the dismount). B dismount = 0.5, A dismount = 0.3 For example, a high bar routine with an in-bar, a giant, a release move, and a flyaway will receive 1.8.
Presentation: Before, the exercise presentation deductions were taken out of 5.4. Now, they will be taken out of a 10.0. A small deduction = -0.1 A medium deduction = -0.3 (Before, it was -0.2) A large deduction = -0.5 (Before, it was -0.3) A fall = -0.8 (Before, it was -0.5) An extra half intermediate swing is now -0.3, and an extra full intermediate swing is now -0.5.
Bonus: +0.3 bonus for a routine that fully meets all 5 element group requirements +0.1 bonus for a stuck landing on all B-value dismounts (except pommel horse). +0.1 bonus for each double salto on floor without a large error. +0.1 bonus for connecting A+E, B+D, or C+C (or vice versa) tumbling elements on floor exercise. +0.2 bonus for connecting C+E, D+D, or D+E (or vice versa) tumbling elements on floor exercise. +0.1 bonus for each B-value strength on still rings without a large error. +0.1 bonus for connecting two ascending D/E/F strength elements on still rings. +0.1 bonus for a stuck landing on either vault performed (or both). +0.1 bonus any C-value release move on high bar. +0.2 bonus any D-value release move on high bar. +0.5 bonus any E- or F-value release move on high bar, or any Kovacs. +0.2 bonus for connecting two D/E/F release moves on high bar. +0.1 bonus for connecting a C-value release to a D/E/F release on high bar. +0.2 bonus for connecting a D/E/F on-bar skill to a D/E/F release on high bar.
For example, a routine with one D, three Cs, two Bs, and two As, that meets all five of the element group requirements (including full credit on the dismount), and has a stuck landing, will now start at a 14.3.
